Opening Prayer: Almighty God, make this time and opportunity for me to hear Your special word for me today, and go with me so I may obey Your word. Amen.
Read: James 5:13-18
Reflect: Which of James’ instructions in this passage do you find most helpful? In what ways is the prayer of the righteous person powerful and effective? How satisfied do you think James would be with the prayer of Christians today?
Prayer: for the church, for others, and for myself
Hymn: “Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart”
Spirit of God, descend upon my heart.
Wean it from earth; through all its pulses move.
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art,
And make me love Thee as I ought to love.
Hast Thou not bid us love Thee, God and King?
All, all Thine own – soul, heart, and strength, and mind!
I see Thy cross – there teach my heart to cling.
O let me seek Thee, and O let me find!
Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh.
Teach me the struggles of the soul to bear,
To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh;
Teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.
Teach me to love Thee as Thine angels love,
One holy passion filling all my frame;
The baptism of the heav’n descended Dove –
My heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.
Closing Prayer: May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.

Read: Psalm 51
Reflect: This is a great prayer of repentance. What are the words that indicate the Psalmist repentance? What requests does the Psalmist make? What statements found in this Psalm have your found helpful in your prayer life?

Hymn: “Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart”

Read: 1 Kings 19:9-18
Reflect: Is it surprising to you that God comes with a gentle whisper? When has God been revealed to you in the small and quiet things of life? How does God’s voice sound when He speaks to you?
Prayer: for the church, for others, and for myself
Hymn: “Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart”

Reflect: What is Jesus’ most difficult instruction on prayer for you? How do Jesus’ words here inform the way you pray? How often do you pray the Lord’s Prayer? How frequently do you think Christians ought to pray it?
