Opening Prayer: Almighty God, create in me a deep seated holiness that cannot be shaken. Help me to know the power of Your transforming grace in my life. Amen.

Read: Psalm 3

Read: Daniel 6

Reflection: silent or written

Prayer: for the church, for others, and for myself

Hymn: “Jesus, Lover of My Soul”

Jesus, Lover of my soul,
Let me to Thy bosom fly,
While the nearer waters roll,
While the tempest still is high!
Hide me, O my Savior, hide,
Till the storm of life is past.
Safe into the haven guide.
O receive my soul at last!

Other refuge have I none;
Hangs my helpless soul on Thee.
Leave, ah, leave me not alone;
Still support and comfort me!
All my trust on Thee is stayed;
All my help from Thee I bring.
Cover my defenseless head
With the shadow of Thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, are all I want;
More than all in Thee I find.
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick, and lead the blind.
Just and holy is Thy name;
I am all unrighteousness.
False and full of sin I am;
Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with Thee is found,
Grace to cover all my sin.
Let the healing streams abound;
Make and keep me pure within.
Thou of life the Fountain art;
Free let me take of Thee.
Spring Thou up with in my heart;
Rise to all eternity.

Closing Prayer: Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21)

Friday, September 19

Opening Prayer: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open and all desires known and from you no secrets are hidden, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify Your holy Name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

Read: 1 John 4:15-21

Reflect: How are abiding in God and loving our brothers connected? Why do you think John says a person is a liar if they say they love God and hate their brother? How does loving God help us love others?

Prayer: for the church, for others, and for myself

Hymn: “O Love That Will Not Let Me Go”
O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in Thee.
I give Thee back my life I woe,
That in Thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O Light that followst all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to Thee.
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in Thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me though pain,
I cannot close my heart to Thee.
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be.

O cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee.
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

Closing Prayer: Almighty Father, I have come into Your presence today to grow as a disciple of Jesus, as I go through the rest of my day, help me to live a life of worship and continue to draw me closer to Yourself. Amen.

Thursday, September 18

Opening Prayer: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open and all desires known and from you no secrets are hidden, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify Your holy Name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

Read: John 9:1-34

Reflect: What are the differences between the man born blind and the Pharisees? What reason does the man born blind give for his belief that Jesus is from God? We may never have Jesus spit on us, but how can we experience transformation like Jesus gave the man born blind? Does it take Jesus spitting on us to give us faith like the man born blind?

Prayer: for the church, for others, and for myself

Read: Psalm 27

Reflect: Psalm 27 seems to capture the difficulty that humans have balancing God’s nearness and God’s distance. How does David express God’s nearness? How does he indicate that God is distant? How do you deal with this tension in your Christian walk?
