Opening Prayer: Almighty God, please come and encounter me in this time I spend in Your Word, that I may leave with a deeper understanding of the gospel. Amen.

Read: 1 Samuel 17:1-30

Prayer: for the church, for others, and for myself

O for a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free,
A heart that always feels Thy blood
So freely shed for me.

A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer’s throne,
Where only Christ is heart to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone.

O for a lowly contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean,
Which neither life nor death can part
From Him that dwells within.

A heart in every though renewed
And full of love divine,
Perfect and right and pure and good
A copy, Lord, of Thine.

Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;
Come quickly from above;
Write Thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of Love.

Opening Prayer: Almighty God, come and meet with me in this time that I may experience the sweetness of being Your servant. Amen.

Read: Philippians 2:19-30

Reflect: I will be preaching from this passage on Sunday. Allow Paul’s account of Timothy and Epaphroditus to inspire you as you consider the place of familial love in the church.

Prayer: for the church, for others, and for myself

Hymn: “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee,
Opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee;
Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays.
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flowery meadow flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in Thee!

Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Wellspring of the joy of living,
Ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother-
All who live in love are Thine.

Mortals join the mighty chorus
Which the morning stars began.

In the triumph songs of life!

Reflect: What reasons does Jesus give his listeners to keep from worrying? Are Jesus’ reasons helpful? Often times worry is connected to complaining and arguing, how can ceasing worry help stop complaining?
